UniGroup reduced safety events by 42% with AI Dash Cams
In partnership with Samsara, UniGroup streamlines fleet management and enhances their driver experience. By consolidating operations and leveraging Samsara’s innovative solutions, they save time on critical workflows, improve safety, and reduce emissions.

Meet UniGroup
UniGroup needed a reliable ELD solution and visibility into road incidents
Owned by more than 450 member agencies, UniGroup is a $1.5 billion transportation cooperative that handles one-third of all professional moves in the United States. With a dispersed team operating cross-country, maintaining visibility into their drivers and vehicles is essential to ensuring safety, compliance, and operational efficiency.
Before adopting Samsara, UniGroup had access to basic telematics data but faced reliability issues with their previous system. Without dash cams, they lacked visibility into on-the-road incidents, making it difficult to proactively manage safety. Given their drivers’ long-haul routes and the fact that many do not return to a home agency daily, UniGroup needed a dependable, real-time solution to track and support their fleet more effectively.
A long-term technology partner rooted in innovation
UniGroup’s primary need was a new ELD solution, but after seeing the power of Samsara’s AI Dash Cams, they decided on a simultaneous rollout. “The cameras sold me. I remember seeing the demos and thinking how incredible the AI technology is,” said Jim Rockwell, Director of Integrated Operations.
UniGroup phased their large-scale installation over the course of six months. “Samsara’s instructions were extremely detailed and the how-to videos made it easy for van operators to install on their own,” said Pilgram. Today, UniGroup regularly meets with Samsara about new innovation opportunities and trials new products and features to further improve their operations.
A change management partner to secure driver buy-in
Without dash cams in place, tickets and citations were UniGroup’s primary indicators of safety incidents prior to Samsara. Wanting to take their safety program from reactive to proactive, they decided to implement Samsara AI Dash Cams, but securing buy-in among their 4,700 drivers and owner-operators was a massive undertaking. To assist with change management strategies, they leaned on Samsara for support. “Samsara provided us with materials explaining how the cameras work—those resources helped sell our drivers on the dash cams,” said Pilgram. “Better yet, getting buy-in was fast and simple once the first driver was exonerated.”
AI Dash Cams enable UniGroup to address their most important safety metrics head on. “Samsara data allows us to learn more about our drivers and their habits,” said Pilgram. Now, in-cab alerts help drivers develop safe behaviors by reinforcing the correct action in real-time. Prioritizing alerts for speeding, harsh driving, and following distance, UniGroup has made significant improvements to their safety program. Notably, they reduced the total number of safety events requiring coaching by 42% and achieved an overall Safety Score of 92.
Reducing safety events by 42% with in-cab alerts
To gain visibility into their vehicles, UniGroup partnered with Samsara to implement AI Dash Cams across their fleet—their first-ever dash cam deployment. With Samsara's change management support, they secured fast dash cam buy-in among their 4,700 drivers. Using in-cab alerts to reinforce safe driving practices, UniGroup saw a 42% reduction in safety events in just one year.
LEARN HOW
Automating fuel purchase processing with Samsara’s open API
Leveraging Samsara’s open API, UniGroup automated how they process fuel purchase data. After a driver takes a picture of a fuel receipt (via the digital Documents feature in the Driver App), the fuel purchase data is automatically pulled into UniGroup’s mainframe system. Then, it is automatically cross-checked against HOS data to proactively identify instances of theft or fraud—increasing efficiency and reducing manual work for their back office. As a result, UniGroup achieved a 95% decrease in fuel purchase processing time; what used to take roughly three weeks of manual work is now a near-instantaneous automated process.
Cutting emissions with fuel efficiency reporting
To reduce vehicle emissions and improve fuel efficiency, UniGroup launched an efficiency program informed by Samsara data. Targeting idling reduction and optimized fuel purchasing, UniGroup regularly meets with their owner-operators to share insights for more efficient operations. This approach cut costs and strengthened driver partnerships, resulting in an initial 5% reduction in idling.

Automating processes and reducing idling with an integrated platform
Efficiency is essential for an organization as complex as UniGroup, and they rely on Samsara to maintain smooth operations across many areas of their business. By leveraging Samsara’s open API to automate fuel purchase data processing, they cut processing time by 95%. Additionally, they use Samsara’s Fuel & Energy Reports to inform their newly-launched efficiency program—promising early results included a 5% reduction in idling.
LEARN HOWStreamlined workflows for drivers and the back office
Because of UniGroup’s complex organizational model, their drivers must switch between MOAs, which makes tracking miles and hours of service a challenge. To streamline HOS management and stay compliant with federal regulations, UniGroup needed a technology partner that was easy to install and could innovate alongside them.
To help meet the needs of their drivers, UniGroup and Samsara pioneered the development of a new feature that allows drivers to easily switch between MOAs within the Samsara Driver App. This feature—along with guided workflows that, for example, remind drivers to certify their logs at the end of the day—has transformed how their organization operates, simplifying drivers’ day-to-day workflows and streamlining HOS management.
With Samsara’s easy-to-use Driver App, UniGroup has seen a 10% decrease in ELD hotline calls from drivers and a noticeable improvement in driver morale. “The Driver App has helped with morale by making it easy and fast for our van operators to access the right tools, saving us time in the back office,” said Pilgram. Now, automated reminders prompt drivers to complete tasks, streamlining workflow compliance. As a result, UniGroup has increased the number of submitted DVIRs by 11%.
Improved driver workflows reduce ELD hotline calls and increase DVIR submissions
UniGroup’s drivers switch between MOAs so tracking miles and hours of service (HOS) is complicated. In partnership with Samsara, they developed a feature in the Driver App that enables seamless MOA switching and provides guided workflows to streamline HOS management and simplify drivers' tasks. As a result, UniGroup experienced a 10% reduction in ELD hotline calls and an 11% increase in submitted DVIRs.
